Queen Anne’s War begins.

The American phase of the War of Spanish Succession, it pits England, Austria and Holland against France and Spain. In Boston, the war provides an opportunity for ship captains to engage in privateering. It ends with England gaining control over Newfoundland and Nova Scotia under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
